Interview: Nneka on BBC + Heartbeat

Posted on December 23rd, 2009 by Ovie O

If there’s any major artiste we slept on right here on notjustOk.com in 2009, it has to be Nneka! (well, most people slept on her anyway). She’s been doing quite well in Europe but never really got a head start in Africa… till her MOBO Award win, followed closely by a Channel O nod. Today, this Waffi babe (born and bred) has broken every barrier when it comes to African music, and she’s started hitting the US hard with a tour billed to start soon. A possible Grammy candidate, if you ask me.

She recently gave a candid interview to Bola Mosuro of BBC Network Africa about how her career has blossomed since her MOBO win. You can watch the interview below.

Credits to BBC Africa.

ovie I hail!! as a warri boy we IS proud of we warri sistah!!! but you are not the only ones that slept on…..THE WHOLE NIGERIA slept on her and kept naming other artists as best naijan artists because they are big on the Nigerian scene!! I have been hammering Nneka on my previous comments, thanks for sheding light!! SHE IS ON THE FIFA ‘10 VIDEO GAME ALSO!!!!….

Two things I like about her:
1) UNlike MOST Nigerians and Like Fela, she shuns all that elitism and diva-rism, no red carpet, glam-bullshit
2) On her new mixtape she collaborated with the best rapper alive in my opinion: JAY ELECTRONICA!! if you never heard of him then you aint HIPHOP

Observer, I swear, your head is there! I also heard her song on the FIFA ‘10 game at a buddy’s place. I’ve also been doing alot of Nneka browsing lately make man no carry last (kpata-kpata na draw. U know every.)

Na D.S.C. Primary school she go sef, but na NNPC Sec. she finish. Omo, she hold her side pieces o! Her pepper rest like stew. But you go surprise say her lingo sef strong pass your own and my own. Full-blooded Waffarian… but more importantly, full-blooded Nigerian.

For me, what sets her apart is her realness. No mesca-forming, no misyarning, no phorne-ing. She’s already going places.

She really can sing…Love the songs posted…Love the fact that she speaks with her Nigerian accent and doesn’t try to fake a foreign one…I wish her continued success….It’s 9ja
