Proverb ft Mode 9 – ProMode
Posted on January 27th, 2010 by Ovie OI’ve been doing a lot of browsing lately; checking out the level of hiphop in other African countries, while engaging myself in productive discussions with my close buddies from several parts of Africa. In doing so, I got a chance to listen to a few rap albums by some of Africa’s finest lyricists. It will surprise you how good these guys are, and how blind some of us actually are when we conclude that the “best rapper in Nigeria” automatically becomes the “best rapper in Africa.”
Take South African rapper, Proverb, for example (he was on the All Around The A track Mola posted a couple of months back). I listened to his most recent album, Write of Passage (released in 2009) and I couldn’t skip a single track… not a single track!
“Promode” is one of the tracks on Proverb’s album which features Naija’s own rap kingpin, Mode 9. On this track, both rappers came korrect in a bid to show why they’re regarded by many across the continent as the best in the field (try counting the number of sick bars on this joint). I sincerely believe African hiphop has reached a point where we can comfortably sell it to the world. What ya think?
*O.O*

cross ur mind like ash wednesday . .. proverb u d bomb!!
i aint quarelling o…when i added those guys mi prod is similar to kanye, jag similar to neptunes,i didnt mean they did soul beats…qtip, jungle bros, dela soul, lupe do soul hiphop,n jonah/glynx is gud wit d boom bap flavor…abt mode’s versatility,is it on topics or construction of lyrics?…cos mode make ref to social issues, love, lag state of mind,419 state of mind,i dnt knw d title of this track bt was actually talkin abt his pad n pen, contradiction, leaders of 2moro,fellow nigerians, raps abt himself,n battle raps…is dat nt versatile enough?…i listened to few tracks off da book mixtape too,pro was stil lyk i can do this,i can do that too(am sayin aside d multies, pro n mode themes are similar)…its jst abt skill braggin,am nt sayin mode is beta bt some aspects mode can knock him off…abt d soul beats n soul hiphop…educate me…a song lyk cry wld be called?it had a soul hook n soul feel?same as lupe’s daydreamin wit jil scott n erykah badu…am nt sayin am head,bt as long as u use soul samples, soul beat,i feel u r doin soul+hiphop n i didnt put hiphop b4 d soul(hiphop soul)
I forgot to add…soul/jazz/funk beats+hiphop=alternative rap…thats wot i actually meant
boss I aint quarelling too man I just didnt had to point some issues out man cos others might be reading too man so no missinfo spread around man, you just clarified what you meant by saying alternative hiphop which is cool!! dont get me wrong I never said modo wasnt ill but even with those songs which u pointed out and i had listened to (and by the way there was once a time i used to point modo as one of the illest in naija) its not about rapping about diverse topics, its how you go about it, even LIL SCRAPPY had made “conscious” or “positive” songs with the tupac sample but i know u wouldnt consider him a conscious rapper, same with soul beats just cos I got an ill beat with soul sample from hi-tek dosent mean Im automatically a hiphop-soul rapper, if thats true that would make saigon a soul rapper too cos there was a time he was on preemo & 9th wonders tracks but Im sure u and I wont count Saigon as our top emcees, I know you know what I mean
i aint quarelling o…when i added those guys mi prod is similar to kanye, jag similar to neptunes,i didnt mean they did soul beats…qtip, jungle bros, dela soul, lupe do soul hiphop,n jonah/glynx is gud wit d boom bap flavor…abt mode’s versatility,is it on topics or construction of lyrics?…cos mode make ref to social issues, love, lag state of mind,419 state of mind,i dnt knw d title of this track bt was actually talkin abt his pad n pen, contradiction, leaders of 2moro,fellow nigerians, raps abt himself,n battle raps…is dat nt versatile enough?…i listened to few tracks off da book mixtape too,pro was stil lyk i can do this,i can do that too…its jst abt skill braggin,am nt sayin mode is beta bt some aspects mode can knock him off…abt d soul beats n soul hiphop…educate me…a song lyk cry wld be called?it had a soul hook n soul feel?same as lupe’s daydreamin wit jil scott n erykah badu…am nt sayin am head,bt as long as u use soul samples, soul beat,i feel u r doin soul+hiphop n i didnt put hiphop b4 d soul(hiphop soul)
Abi my broda…this track was initiated by Pro,he went harder…as i said,d track was impromtu…proverb asked mode for a collabo durin emcee africa 1st edition in SA…this track hot sha,SA rap producers r good,i still trust glynx, kraft,mi,jags, jonah d monarch….with these guys u see a lil kanye west productn,a lil neptune,a lil 9th wonder,a lil alchemist,a lil premo,a lil hi tek…these guys soul+hiphop beats r def dope, not some naija so called rappers go go dey carry terry g n ksolo beats, dem go say na rap dem wan rap
how far my broda arrow!!! I no know since when your location begin affect wetin you get for head!! whether kick knowledge in Naija or SA, an emcee is ever ready!! Modo is ill but he aint versatile, check out his other tracks: Nigerian Girl, or the other one featuring Nneka with references to Cult boys and all, those are diff concepts than the usual “I spit ill” modo is known for but not that diff from other artists tackling it
Now I must let you know that SOUL BEATS and SOUL HIPHOP are 2 different things alchemist caters mostly to harcore so does primo and neptunes should not be on that your list which is cliched like a mutha!! its not the sign of a head! a true head diggs the crates, Im sure you know what that means, just cos some one raps on a SOUL BEAT dosent make it SOUL HIPHOP theres a big difference!! theres a big difference! the ones on your CLICHE-d list that would qualify for soul producers primarily are: hi-tek, & 9th wonder as for the rest, what were you thinking when you typed those names and referenced “SOUL BEATS” your list does not include the following:
BLACK MILK
WAAJEED (who is one of the illest soul producer/ghost producer)
J DILLA
DJ KHALIL (does some nasty soul sometimes)
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY AN UNKNOWN BUT NEW GUY WHO HAS MY HEART AS THE ILLEST SOUL PRODUCER OF MODERN TIMES BECAUSE HE IS AN INSTRUMENTALIST LIKE ME A GUY BY THE NAME OF:
SLAKAH THE BEATCHILD click below to check out some samples

some may say SLAKAH THE BEATCHILD is J DILLA re-incarnated but i RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE!! He is a Genious of EMOTIONAL SOUL MUSIC
this is not a rebuttal to your post but just from one HIPHOP HEAD TO ANOTHER
NOT JUST OK POLICE

omo u vex o
chief nobody dey vex I only dey point out some issues
Modey didn’t even go th@ hard … Cool jam. But if this song was meant 4both cats to go their hardest … they failed. As a MODENINE die hard, this was way below his regular level of skill. I like Proverb too (and I’ve hrd him go harder too). People shud stop making these blogs bout hu went harder n jus feel the damn jam. PROMODE baby!!!
Bros…i can call pro d illest on multies in africa bt k’naan no,i no gree,if u add him, blak twang shld be included n now sway(both african uk rappers),mode is clever wit metaphors n wordplay n i say pro cant touch him there…punchlines they myt drag
But pro is away any rapper v heard on multies, africa n rest of da world,he stil punchlines wit em,
Have u heard rise of d underdog
