It’s that time again when we bring together the TEN (10) most exciting songs/posts from the previous month; in this case, July 2010. July brought us several Marathon collaborations with the Cool2Vote Allstars song “I Go Vote” (by about 20 Nigerian artistes) being one of the major releases. Veteran music and movie soundtrack producer LayLow is here with the first single off his highly anticipated forth coming compilation album project which will involve over 50 top Nigerian artistes both locally and internationally. “Meet Me At The Top” features – in order of appearance – Iceberg Slim, CartiAir, Mode 9, Terry Tha Rapman, Skales, Vector, Dagrin (R.I.P) , Ludu & Gino.

In 2009, Tha Suspect’s “I No Send You” Mega-Remix was seen by many as the biggest hiphop collaboration of the year. This new effort from Laylow and the aforementioned rappers can be seen as the 2010 successor. It plays host to 9 of the finest Mcee’s in the land currently holding their own. The beat is dope, the verses are dope, the hook is dope!

Verdict: Grade A!

If you’ve been following NJO since 2008, you will remember a UK-based group called H20. They made the tracks “Naira” and “Hennessy” (you’re forgiven if you don’t remember). HCode is/was the brain behind the rap group. He’s now cooking up his own solo project with “Iwo Ni” being the lead single. I like the song and the video.

Battle-rapper Vector has just released the video for his official debut single “Kilode” off the upcoming “State of Surprise” album.

About a month ago, I had a “State of Surprise” private album listening session with Vector’s management, and I’ll tell you this… expect a bit of everything in the album. Hardcore hiphop, commercial hiphop, countless subliminals etc. When it drops, I see it making an impact. Be on the look out for it.

So, Vector has decided not to joke with his music in 2010.

Here’s Vector’s official 2nd single, after the release of “Kilode” off his soon-to-be-released debut album titled “State of Surprise.” On this joint, Vector takes us to “Jamaica” with “Mary Jane” as the theme of the song (…go figure), and the production/beats also falls along the same line.

I’m sure we all agree that Vector DOES NOT sound like Jay-Z on this joint. IMO, he’s quickly carving out his own “vocal identity”. Whether you agree with me or not, one thing’s for sure: his lyrics are his! V.E.C. might just become a real force in Naija’s HipHop market sooner than later. Listen and share your thoughts…
